Brazilian visas for people moving to Porto Alegre
Visa policy is federal. Porto Alegre does not have a special visa. You deal with a consulate or with the Polícia Federal on Avenida Ipiranga. The city only changes how long you wait in the room.
If you are just looking
US, Canadian, and Australian citizens have needed a tourist eVisa since April 2025. The fee is US$80.90. You get 90 days on arrival. The Polícia Federal can extend that toward 180 days in your migratory year (12 months from first entry). Apply before day 90 at gov.br. It is for scouting. It does not authorise work.
Mercosul citizens have a simpler residence path. Use it.
Digital nomad, VITEM XIV
Resolution CNIg 45/2021. In 2026 it still wants:
- US$1,500/month foreign income or US$18,000 in savings
- Remote work for a foreign employer or foreign clients
- Apostilled background check
- Application at a consulate, or in-country via MigranteWeb after you enter legally
Valid 1 year, renewable once on paper (two years total). Some people have obtained a third year in practice. Treat that as practice, not a right. It is not permanent residency.
A VITEM XIV does not pause the tax clock. After 184 days in any 12-month window, the Receita treats you as resident. Read taxes.
Work, VITEM V
A Brazilian employer pulls you in. If a local company is hiring you onto CLT, this is the honest route. If you will keep a foreign employer, look at VITEM XIV instead.
Family
Brazilian spouse, stable union (união estável, including same-sex relationships), or a Brazilian child. This route can lead to permanent residence. The paperwork runs through the civil registry: apostilles, sworn translations, and a cartório (registry office).
Retirement and investment
Pension income of US$2,000/month or more (CNIg RN 40/2019). Investor routes want real money in a company or property. Only do this if you were going to invest anyway.
After you arrive
A visa in a passport is not the end. You usually still need:
- Entry stamp / control
- Polícia Federal appointment
- Biometrics
- CRNM (the residence card, old RNE)
- CPF if you skipped it
Porto Alegre’s PF is a building, a ticket, and a morning. Book through official gov.br / MigranteWeb links only. Despachantes exist. Some are useful.
Citizenship, later
Ordinary naturalisation wants years of residence, Portuguese, and a clean record. Portuguese-speaking nationals have a shorter path. Ask a lawyer, not a comment thread.
